1Q Lending Activity Grew by 1 Percent from A Year Ago

Commercial mortgage origination volume in the first quarter increased by 1 percent from the same period a year ago, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

The 23 percent decrease in originations by commercial banks was more than offset by the 12 percent increase in lending activity by CMBS shops, 9 percent increase by life insurance companies and 8 percent increase by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The quarter was the busiest, in terms of origination volumes for the two housing-finance agencies and life insurance companies.
