Rockland County, N.Y. Exec Blasts New Mall for Not Paying Property Taxes

WEST NYACK, N.Y. – The Palisades Center Mall in Rockland County apparently owes $17.5 million in property taxes.

Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef says the mall hasn't paid its school taxes since September 1998. And in January 1999 it didn't pay its county or town taxes.

Vanderhoef says the county lays out the tax money for the school district and the town and then goes after the delinquent taxpayer. He says the $17.5 million tax bill owed by the Palisades Center will cause a budget problem for the county.

Vanderhoef says the mall officials held a news conference yesterday thanking the government for removing the sales tax on clothing purchases under $110.

Vanderhoef says he agreed with removing the sales tax, but it is hypocritical for the mall to complain about taxes when it doesn't pay them.
