Developers Look to Makeover Downtown Pittsburgh Buildings

Local developers are vying to makeover the G.C. Murphy building and other publicly owned properties in the Fifth and Forbes corridor of downtown Pittsburgh. Mayor Bob O'Connor is fielding bids from several bidders and hopes to make a decision by the summer. Bidders include local developer Jack Piatt who is proposing a $50 million project that would involve residential and commercial components with some retail. Developer Ralph Falbo has pitched a $75 million to $100 million plan that would involve reuse of the Murphy's store and a new 18- to 20-story residential building that would border Forbes and Fourth avenues. In addition, Washington, D.C., developer Madison Marquette, in partnership with Montgomery County residential builder Toll Brothers, has been working for some time on a $50 million to $60 million proposal that involves Murphy's and other Urban Redevelopment Authority-owned properties in the corridor. It has plans for 150 to 200 rental apartments, plus upscale retail the likes of Crate &
Barrel and Tiffany & Co.
